Prayer is a necessity and a way of life for a Christian. We must talk to God if we want to be closer to Him. Like anything that happens daily, prayer can become routine. Here are four ways to pray that you can use to mix up your routine and keep your relationship with God fresh.
- Worshipping Prayer
- Prayer Lists
- Praying the Scripture
- Thankful Prayer
Worshipping Prayer:
Psalm 29:2 NLT
Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
God is a king with all power, might, knowledge, and wisdom. So of course, there are many needs that we want to bring before Him. However, since He is the King of Kings, sometimes it’s good to exalt Him. A worshipping prayer is a time to focus on worshipping and praising Him. No requests, no tears of sorrow —just love and adoration for our God. Some ways you can incorporate a prayer of worship are reflections on His might, power, and victories; you can play worship songs and sing aloud; or find some worship psalms of David to read aloud to Him. This kind of prayer is a good reminder that He is above all things and greater than anything you will face.
Prayer Lists:
Ephesians 6:18 NLT
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
The Bible encourages us to pray for one another. Create prayer lists for the specific needs you know about in your church family, co-workers, or personal needs. Use prayer lists to pray in-depth and with sincerity for other’s needs as though they were your own. There is also biblical evidence that praying for others’ needs leads to your own needs being answered. (See Job, when he prayed for his friends, Job 42:10)
Pray the Scripture
Hebrews 4:12 NLT
For the word of God is alive and powerful…
Psalm 12:6 KJV
The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
The Word of God is a living container of God’s power. It’s a good idea to pray God’s words directly from the Bible. You can quote psalms of praise, repentance, and word-for-word promises of God. This should increase your faith as you speak the true words of God into your life.
Thankful Prayers
Colossians 4:2 ESV
Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
Psalm 107:1 ESV
Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!
This kind of prayer is similar to a worshipping prayer. It is a good reminder to be thankful for everything. You could include verses about being thankful (many found in Psalms) and try to think in detail of the many ways God provides for us daily.
Prayer is a privilege and one that we can take for granted. Prayer brings your thinking in line with God. Praying with worship, thankfulness, and quoting the scripture can enrich your daily time with God.
Psalm 145:18 ESV
The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
